‘New Tricks’ is the new single from Kayla Mahon, formerly of New Zealand duo The Heartleys. Co-written with singer/songwriter/producer Roger Corbett of The Bushwackers fame, this track was influenced by that old saying, ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’. A light-hearted, comical look in ways we try and convince our partner to change their ways. ‘New Tricks’ features on Kayla’s debut EP “Girl On The Move”, which was released in August and produced by the track’s co-author.
On its release “Girl On The Move” peaked at #1 on the iTunes Country Albums chart (NZ) and debuted at #7 on the Top 20 New Zealand Albums chart – The Official NZ Music Charts VIEW CHART HERE The EP was launched at the Town and Country Stadium, in Gore – NZ’s official home of country music – to a sell-out crowd of 500 people.
Just prior to releasing her debut EP, Kayla was presented with the Horizon Award at the Country Music Awards New Zealand – previous winners have included Jody Direen and Kaylee Bell. This honour will also make it possible for Kayla to travel to Nashville, USA and perform as part of the Global Artist Showcase at the 2016 CMA Music Festival. Kayla will also travel to the Nundle NSW DAG Sheep Station during the 2016 Hats Off To Country Festival in nearby Tamworth as part of her song-writing scholarship. The DAG and APRA/AMCOS have partnered to reward one of the Horizon Award nominees with the scholarship including an all expenses trip to the songwriters’ retreat.
Before heading overseas, the Riversdale Southland resident will be singing in the New Year with a performance at The Branding Festival by the river near Lake Wanaka. The summer camping festival features over 20 hours of music from artists including Morgan Evans, Kaylens Rain and Kaylee Bell.
