‘Merry Christmas Anyway!’ from Merilyn Steele
‘Merry Christmas Anyway!’ marks the debut original festive release from Sydney-based Americana artist Merilyn Steele.
This is a happy, upbeat song that paints the picture of what a typical Christmas might be for many of us. The track takes you on a visual journey of the Christmas experience starting from the preparation of putting up the decorations, the shopping, right through to the magic of the day. Also sending a message that despite your Yuletide beliefs, just gather with family and friends and enjoy each other’s company. With bonus anti-stress advice – “it doesn’t mean that everything has to be perfect”.
Recorded at Studio 57 in Sydney’s Taren Point with producer/engineer, Marc Scully, it’s a cheerful song with elements of brass, glockenspiel and even tubular bells to get you into the Christmas spirit. Merilyn has played all the guitars on this track (excluding bass) most notably the studio’s treasured Sundowner Nashville guitar, most percussion and all vocals including harmonies.
Merilyn Steele is a seasoned performer having worked successfully for many years in varied line-ups including with resident club bands, solo at festivals and with her duo, Alter Ego. The singer-songwriter also fronts/directs her own 5-piece band. She has performed in shows all around Australia and internationally in clubs, hotels, private functions, festivals, weddings, and cruises. It’s hard to figure where Merilyn’s influence to be a singer/songwriter came from and while both her mum and grandmother played piano, it was mostly for a hobby. It was Merilyn’s dad who purchased the then 12-year-old her first guitar and began taking her to music lessons. From there her love of music developed and she penned her first song at 14. Today Merilyn continues to perform on a regular basis in local venues around Sydney and the East Coast in addition to teaching singing, guitar and song writing at her home studio and is a tutor at St George Community College.
