THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT

One would imagine, new single from The Long And Short Of It, ‘Beatles Without John’, could possibly be a tribute to the fab four. And while the duo’s lead vocalist/guitarist David does cite them as one of his influences, after listening to the lyrics, it becomes apparent that this is actually a love song.
As one voice sings to a lost lover that her absence makes him feel like the Beatles without John: “There’d be no Beatles without John, and there’s no harmonies since you’ve been gone – I’m just a sad song.” This track also offers up some of the best organ work on the album, whispering on top of the shuffle percussion.
This track is the 2nd single to be released from “You Made Me Stronger” – the duo’s fifth album. After working on original material and sifting through 2000 plus song submissions, in September 2013 The Long And Short Of It travelled to Nashville Tennessee to record with Emmy award-winning producer Kenny Royster.
Kenny assembled a collection of high profile session musicians, including Dennis Holt (former drummer of Kansas), keyboardist Howard Duck (Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts), banjo/acoustic guitarist Bobby Terry (Brad Paisley, Tim McGraw), and lead & slide guitarist Pat Buchanan (Lynyrd Skynyrd, Kenny Chesney) to bring the album tracks to life.
The album’s first radio single, ‘Latter Day Cowboy’ peaked at #14 on the Country Tracks Top 40 – a first for the Melbourne-based duo – and the accompanying video clip was recently released. Check it out HERE

Doug McIntyre – Back In The Little Town

“Back In The Little Town” – the self-penned new radio single from Southern Highlands based singer-songwriter Doug McIntyre is the captivating story of the Australian prodigal son. The son leaves home, blows his inheritance in Brisbane, ends up sleeping in a cardboard box under the city’s ‘Story Bridge’, then crawls back home where the ‘old man’ accepts him with open arms.

This song possesses all the characteristics of a classic Aussie Country/Rock ballad and is the first single to be lifted from Doug’s third album “Riding Free”. Produced by current CMAA Producer Of The Year, Matt Fell (Sara Storer, John Williamson, Graeme Connors) the album will be released next month.

Doug grew up at Goolgowi, in the northern Riverina of NSW and has been inspired by everyone from Pavarotti to Slim Dusty. Music was always played in Doug’s childhood home with his grandad playing accordion and Doug picking up the guitar at 14. An artist who writes songs about Australia for Australians, Doug was named ‘Male Rising Star’ at the Australian Independent Country Music Awards, and went on to become a CMAA Academy of Country Music graduate.

“I’m fascinated by people’s stories, and I love this great country of ours! I share my passion through my words and music; light a spark in people, drop them in at the scene”

THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT

‘Latter Day Cowboy’ is the latest radio single and the first to be lifted from “You Made Me Stronger” the fifth album from The Long And Short Of It.

The Melbourne-based duo was created after a chance meeting at a charity gig just over five years ago. With David Baird on acoustic guitar/lead vocal and Patsy Toop on keyboards along with soulful harmonies their repertoire covers a range of country music styles including rock, folk and ballads.

Although David and Patsy are both classically trained musicians neither started playing professionally till they teamed up in 2009. David’s musical influences include James Taylor, The Beatles, Garth Brooks and The Eagles and Patsy cites Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Patsy Cline and Bon Jovi as her musical heroes.

After working on original material and sifting through 2000 plus song submissions, in September 2013 The Long And Short Of It was ready to travel to Nashville Tennessee. This recording process was to become their new album “You Made Me Stronger”. For nearly three weeks of 10am starts to past midnight finishes, the duo worked with Emmy award-winning producer Kenny Royster of Direct Image Studios and a collection of the music city’s finest musicians.

‘Latter Day Cowboy’ almost didn’t make the cut. Whilst in Nashville, they discovered that producer Kenny had already sent the song to be considered but they hadn’t listened to it yet. “We just love the melodic waltz and the lyrics are beautiful. Lyrics are important to us, we love telling stories through songs and creating imagery for those who listen”, says David.

David is the ‘short’ of the duo – quite shy off the stage and Patsy is the ‘long’ part, an entertainer from an early age. When not performing together their day jobs are poles apart – David is a sign writer and Patsy a lawyer. Despite her passion for the law, Patsy says music keeps her sane, “I just love doing it. We’ve come at this fairly late in our lives – we’re not teenagers… so we practice a lot and really do work hard at it”.

KRISTY JAMES – NOBODY’S GONNA MAKE ME

“Nobody’s Gonna Make Me” the debut EP from Newcastle native Kristy James is the follow-up to her debut single, ‘Overdrive’ which was released in December 2012.

As with ‘Overdrive’, the five-track EP comprises works from Kristy’s own pen plus the EP’s title track and first radio single which is a co-write with APRA and ARIA award-winning songwriter Mike Carr (Melinda Schneider, Adam Brand and Graeme Connors). The EP is written from real life experiences and Kristy completely strips back and bears all in this intense, emotionally raw filled EP.

‘Nobody’s Gonna Make Me’, the radio single, was inspired from the recent success of debut single ‘Overdrive’. Kristy decided to write this song to send the message that at the end of the day it is her hard work and sheer determination that makes her who she is, not anybody else. A powerful song with a powerful message that says you are who you are thanks to some help along the way of course, but at the end of the day, nobody but you, makes you.
Once again Kristy has gathered a who’s who of Australian country music to release her original works. In the producer’s chair again is Simon Johnson of Hillbilly Hut (Adam Harvey, Travis Collins, Buddy Goode), engineering by Jeff McCormack, mixed and mastered by Ted Howard at Rancom St Studios with photography and design by Glen Hannah. Helping to bring the music to life are musicians Jedd Hughes, Luke Davis, Pete Drummond and Mick Albeck with backing vocals by Mike Carr, Marty Worrall and Chris E Thomas.

“Because I’m not listening to what you say, whatever I do I’m doing it my way, you don’t make me who I am, no-one’s gonna make me what I don’t wanna be”,

JACQUI RYAN ‘HEAVEN FOUND ME’

‘Heaven Found Me’ the latest radio single from Brisbane-based Jacqui Ryan comes from the collection pen of Lyn Bowtell and Rick Neigher and speaks of that intense butterfly feeling you get when you know you’ve met someone special. This is the fourth single to be released off “Break Through” the debut album from the 2004 College Of Country Music graduate.

The linked video clip was shot in Melbourne by Crestway Productions aka Carter & Carter. The clip’s love interest is played by indie English actor Christian Heath and while Jacqui enjoyed the experience she insists there’s plenty of footage for a bloopers reel should she ever need one!

The 2003 QLD Champion Of Champions was introduced to country music by her late grandfather; a big Slim Dusty fan who always loved to hear Jacqui sing ‘Blue’ by LeAnn Rimes. But her family always knew she would be an entertainer, dancing by the age of three and then singing by 12.

Jacqui recently performed at the Urban Country Music Festival and looks forward to supporting The McClymonts on their Acoustic Harmony Tour next week.

SALLY-ANNE WHITTEN FINDS ‘MY PLACE IN THE WORLD’

Latest radio single, ‘My Place In The World’ from Sally-Anne Whitten was written by the Tamworth local herself and close friend Allison Forbes. This is a lyrical tale about a musician’s constant struggle between sustaining a “real life” and chasing a career. This career can sometimes seem like a fruitless task, while friends are off playing house with babies, husbands and mortgages, musicians spend every cent on recording, touring and promoting, all in the hope of carving out a name for themselves as an artist.

Sally-Anne philosophises, “The moral to the story is of course, that even though I struggle with it, music is the only true place where I feel like I really belong in the world. So whether I achieve a chart hit or not, it’s something in my blood that I have to do. It’s a family love for music that’s been passed down through the generations. Performing, writing and recording is where I am meant to be… my place in the world”.

When the self-confessed ‘Funky Country’ (a blend of country, rock and blues) artist speaks of ‘a family love’ she’s talking about her dad, Barry Whitten – a guitarist/piano/bass player who taught a young Sally-Anne most of what she knows about music today. As a teenager, he taught her to read and write music and she honed her skills as a backing player – funnily enough as a bass player! From the age of 15 Sally-Anne worked in bands as a session player alongside her dad.

‘My Place In The World’ the second single from “Sell My Soul”, Sally-Anne’s second album release will also have an accompanying video clip released soon. The clip was produced by 171 Entertainment’s Ross Wood who recently produced clips by The Sunny Cowgirls (‘Green And Gold’), Luke O’Shea and Dianna Corcoran (‘New England Sky’) and worked on previous Sally-Anne clips too.

The clip was filmed at the Caipora Alpaca’s property in Duri, 20 minutes outside of Tamworth – the property and beautiful sandstone home of Sally-Anne’s cousin Diane. The songstress felt at home filming at this location, where the home was built by Diane’s stonemason husband Phil and the walls are adorned with pictures and memories of the extended family. Plus on the day of the filming a baby alpaca was born, no doubt a good sign of things to come!
