‘Down The River’ is the third and final track from Jasper Shelton Hollis’ self-titled mini EP. Bathed in true southern fashion heading down the mighty Mississippi River, this is an adventure song. Featuring backing vocals from Gretta Ziller, the single merges howling guitar riffs with pronounced rocky grooves and swampy verses with a clever chorus.
According to Jasper, ‘Down the River’ was the hardest of the three tracks on the mini EP to write. We could only chip away at it, whereas the others, ‘Trying to Pray’ and ‘The Devil’s Garden’ came more naturally.
The mini EP was released in August 2015, co-written with Lola Brinton and produced by Sven Tydeman (Kittygroove) and Pal Sheldon (Artec Sound). The music was created with the talents of Joshua Grange on guitars (Dwight Yoakam, The Dixie Chicks), Lex Price on bass (k.d Lang, Taylor Swift), Jerry Roe on drums (Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell) and Aaron Till on fiddle (The Mavericks, Jim Lauderdale).
Born in Nashville Tennessee, Jasper moved to Australia in 2007, now based in Melbourne. The move to the other side of the world came about through a work opportunity for his wife and nine years later they are still here. Their daughter is a dual citizen and the whole family will follow suit, including baby No.2.
Whilst Jasper has only been in the country music industry for a few years, releasing a couple of singles in 2013 (‘Buckwild’ & ‘Fine As Wine’), he has always surrounded himself with this genre. Prior to the big move, Jasper worked at the Country Music Hall Of Fame and in 2011 graduated from the CMAA College Of Country Music.
In less than 12 months since its release, the mini EP has been acknowledged by the Tamworth Songwriters Association Awards and the Australian Songwriters Association Awards with ‘Down The River’ placing in the Top 10 International Finalist category of the latter.
