Nick Payne, best known as the singer/songwriter/ guitarist of Sydney folk/bluegrass act Dear Orphans is currently in the studio, recording what will become his debut solo album. The as-yet-untitled release will feature 12 songs and be divided into two ‘sides’. Side A will be songs set in the present, produced with contemporary instrumentation and Side B songs will be set in the past but produced with traditional acoustic instrumentation. Co-writes with fellow country music artists Katie Brianna and Megan Cooper are already slated as part of the track listing. Production credits will go to Nick and Lyn Taylor (the other half of Dear Orphans) while the album will be mixed by Glenn Santry of Sydney’s Heartbeat Studio. Nick was introduced to Glenn by Karl Broadie, who incidentally produced the Dear Orphans self-titled debut album in 2009. Working on all Dear Orphans’ musical offerings since that introduction, Nick regards the audio engineer and his hybrid digital and analogue studio, as his secret weapon.
So far three tracks have been completed including the recently released single, ‘Old Sydney Town’ – an ode to the hardships of life in the colony of 1789 Sydney. FREE download HERE.
The most recently completed track, ‘Rising River’, is a cautionary tale about revenge. Tonight they’ll concentrate on mixing ‘Peace Tonight’, which is a song of salvation, death and longing to be re-united. Next steps are tracking the final two numbers of side B which will then be sent out as another FREE download.
From Nick: “The album project is going really well, I’m very happy with how things are going so far. I’m also really excited about the airplay that ‘Old Sydney Town’ has been getting and the really positive feedback that it’s receiving during interviews. It seems that folks really like that it was recorded live and can hear the energy that came out in the performance. Huge thanks to Australian radio for your support and I can’t wait to share ‘Rising River’ with you soon”.
