Ellen Tefanis

'More Than A Hat' Ellen Tefanis

Ellen Tefanis maybe be a new face to Australian country music but not to the broader music community. Born and raised in Port Pirie, South Australia, Ellen’s love of music is all thanks to her dad George; a fellow musician (drums) who performed in various local cover bands over the years. Ellen herself, showed an interest in music when at just eight years of age picked up her first guitar. Singing and song writing are equally as important to the now 24-year-old.

As a teen, Ellen was also a part of the local cover band circuit before 2011’s X Factor winner Reece Mastin discovered the young guitarist on social media and personally invited her to perform at one of his concerts in 2014. As fate would have it, this experience would not be a one-off when just two years later Ellen was chosen to perform live by Keith Urban at his Brisbane show of the 'Ripcord World Tour'.

A video of the performance has had over 7 million views after being featured by US magazine ‘Taste Of Country’, to view

This experience was not only a dream come true moment but a turning point in the young musician’s career after Keith Urban praised her talent and recommended she start singing and creating original music. Ellen shares more, "I still can't believe that I had the opportunity to play with Keith Urban. Keith is the reason why this is all happening as he was the one who encouraged me to start singing and becoming my own artist. Since then, I have been so focused on my original music, and I am so happy he gave me that nudge to become an artist myself".

The debut single, ‘More Than A Hat’ came to Ellen via local singer-songwriter and family friend, Brian R. Sickles. While the lyrics were composed by Brian, 19 years ago in Folsom California, USA, the track has since had a title change from ‘Cowboy (More Than A Hat)’ and the version we hear today was melodically re-arranged by Ellen and father, George. The song was intended as a social comment on how some people think that style and fashion are worthy substitutes for integrity and personal substance. Produced at Sydney’s 301 Studios by Stefan Du Randt (Adam Eckersley and Brooke McClymont), Ellen’s guitar is celebrated and Arlo Sim, The Voice Australia’s 'Team Keith' finalist can be heard on backing vocals.

When not performing or creating music, Ellen is a Secondary School Teacher – specialist subjects include History and Music, and her classes range from Years 9 to 12. For musical heroes, no surprise that Keith Urban tops the list and Brad Paisley, Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Miley Cyrus, Sara Evans, Orianthi and Bon Jovi can also be found on Ellen’s playlists.

‘More Than A Hat’ will be available on all download/streaming platforms from Friday November 5th.

Michelle Little

'Invincible' Michelle Little

‘Invincible’ is the latest radio single from Michelle Little. The title track from Michelle’s 2nd album of original music was released in July 2021. The personal and final song of the album produced by Michael Carpenter, speaks of rising from the depths of despair to discover that you can survive anything this life throws at you.
“It’s raw and relatable and coupled with signature traditional country melodies, is one worth keeping in the collection.”  Haley Sheridan, Country Music Capital News Sept-Oct 2021
Michelle adds, “This song is of hope and overcoming adversity. Pushing on when you feel like you’ve got nothing left to give - that’s what makes me feel ‘invincible’. The inspiration for the song came from an Albert Camus quote that I would use as a kind of mantra whenever I felt like I needed that extra push. This line, really stood out for me “in the midst of winter I found there was within me an invincible summer”.”
Join Michelle as she celebrates the release of ‘Invincible’ (the single) with a LIVE FACEBOOK show tonight (Wednesday Sept 22nd) at 6pm AEST

Katelann Maree

"DIFFERENT KIND OF HIGH" - KATELANN MAREE

“Different Kind Of High” may be Katelann Maree’s debut EP but she was born into a country music loving family. Growing up in Miles, in the Western Downs region of Queensland she was surrounded by music from both sides of the family. Her mum Sharon Grealy is also a singer/songwriter and was a member of the band Skin The Cat – regulars of the Tamworth Country Music Festival. And of course, her grandfather (on her dad’s side) was the inspiration behind the EP’s first single, ‘Grandad’s Guitar’ Jimmy Grealy aka ‘Chinchilla Slim’ is remembered for his finger picking playing style. The single peaked at #2 on the iTunes Australia Singer Songwriter Chart.

From the age of seven, when Jimmy’s guitar was handed down to Katelann, she’s been singing and performing at festivals across QLD and NSW. As a teen, solo performances took a back seat as she was a backing vocalist in her aunty and uncle’s rock band, Band Camp.

In 2015 after being asked by a town local if she would teach her daughter to sing and play guitar, Katelann once again thought about her own solo career. In no time, Katelann was inspiring the next generation of singers and performers and at her mum’s insistence finally applied and was accepted into the CMAA Academy Of Country Music in 2020.

In addition to teaching basic guitar and singing to local children, the singer-songwriter also runs Katelann Maree Health and Fitness - personal/group training sessions and rehabilitation programs with the help of physiotherapists’ guidance for different clients. One of the reasons she became qualified in this area was to help with her brother’s recovery after he was injured by his horse in a feedlot accident. Sustaining multiple injuries including a broken pelvis, ribs, collar bone and brain damage, he spent months in a coma. Cody Grealy is now in a wheelchair and Katelann is assisting in his slow but steady rehabilitation.

Three of the four tracks on “Different Kind Of High” were partly written before attending the academy but with the expert guidance of mentors Catherine Britt and Melody Moko the songs truly came to life. When asked about her academy experience, Katelann says, “Before I attended, I never thought I was good enough. Not only did I learn more about singing, songwriting and performing, it’s where I realised you truly can make a career out of your dream.”

“Different Kind Of High” track by track:
1. Grandad’s Guitar: This was my debut single release co-written with both Catherine and Melody. The song talks of how I was gifted my grandad’s guitar and how I took on his legacy and learnt to play. It describes how I literally played it until my fingers bled hoping one day I could play just like him and how I know grandad would be singing along to my songs if he were still with us.

2. Troubled Man: Co-written with Melody at the academy, it was then called ‘They Don’t Even Ask’, but I felt a name change was needed to truly reflect what the song was about. The real-life tale of how after I separated from my ex-partner he decided to forfeit his duties as a parent and not help or contribute to our children’s upbringing. I could see not only he, but the children were missing out on so much. Eventually the kids stopped asking about him, but in the end it will be ok because I won’t fail them, I will pick up the pieces and fill the holes he had left in their hearts. Hopefully one day he will become the role model they need, and I will always encourage this.

3. Different Kind Of High: Co-written with Catherine, this song is based on the toxic relationship I had with the children’s father which was full of domestic violence, alcohol and drug abuse. It tells the story of how I had to remove myself and the kids from such a bad situation and relationship even though I loved the man I was leaving. In the end I knew it was for the best.

4. Be That Man: Another co-write with both Melody and Catherine – this track reflects on finding a new love and questioning whether he will be the man for me and live by his word. Ultimately a song of hope that he continues to treat me the way he does and if so, he will be the man I keep.

“Different Kind Of High” will be available on all digital/streaming platforms from Sept 24th, 2021

Kevin Sullivan

KEVIN SULLIVAN 'SPEND THE KIDS INHERITANCE'

After exploring ‘High Country Snows’ with Bill Chambers, Kevin Sullivan is back with the feel-good, tongue-in-cheek ‘Spend The Kids Inheritance’. The vibe of the song is set from the very beginning, as soon as you hear the ukulele playing ‘Aloha Oe’, it makes you want to appreciate not only today but the rest of your days.

Helping us value that all important work/life balance, Kevin wrote the song after meeting so many grey nomads while on tour. The common thread in countless conversations was how they were rewarding themselves and more importantly not feeling guilty about investing in their happiness and a long and happy life.

Whilst Kevin’s initial thought process was of retirement, the song became so much more. People of all ages are now realising that we need to get out there and really start living. If the past 18 months has taught us anything it’s that we need to think differently about how we live.

Kevin adds, “The song is almost an anthem to the grey nomads and those living every second. When I sing this song live, everyone in the audience gets it; they cheer, particularly the retirees, they nod and say, ‘yes, that's what we are doing’. But there’s also the personal side of the story. With my career path from the Forensic Police to touring musician and my wife Belinda’s career as a CEO, we’ve slowly realised you can change your paradigm. What we have experienced since our sponsorship with Sunland Off Road Caravans and meeting so many caravaning people is that you can get off the daily grind. It's never too late to get out there and LIVE”.

‘Spend The Kids Inheritance’ is the 5th single from what will be Kevin’s 2nd album. With a working title of “Against The Tide”, no release date has been set. Previous singles include ‘High Country Snows’ (March 2021) - the Number 1 iTunes Country Music Top Songs chart Australia, ‘Against The Tide’ (Sept 2020), ‘Pilgrimage’ (April 2020) and ‘Just Don’t Mention Christmas’ (Nov 2019).

Kevin, Belinda and their three youngest children are currently touring QLD in their custom-built van. Premium Australian caravan company Sunland, have designed and built the family a 3.5 tonne family caravan & named it in their honour… The Sunland Sulli-Van. This is the 2nd leg of the Sulli-Van Tour returning home to NSW (Gerringong, NSW South Coast) in October 2021… at this stage!

‘Spend The Kids Inheritance’ will be released on Friday August 20th, 2021 on all digital/streaming services
and launched at the Innamincka Hotel in South Australia’s outback

Jason Owen (with Tania Kernaghan)

Jason Owen with Tania Kernaghan 'Back Home Again'

Jason Owen is back with a stunning version of one of John Denver’s most iconic songs – ‘Back Home Again’. This version is a duet with fellow country music star Tania Kernaghan.

The single will be released on May 14 – the same day as Jason’s new upcoming album – “Jason Owen Sings John Denver: The Acoustic Sessions”. The album also features such classics as ‘Take Me Home’, ‘Country Roads’, ‘Thank God I’m a Country Boy’, ‘Rocky Mountain High’ and ‘Calypso’.

With the release of his first album in four years, the X Factor star will tour nationally from August onwards.
This new album follows on from the huge success of Jason’s first tribute album to John Denver“Jason Owen Sings John Denver: The 20th Anniversary Album” which spent seven weeks on the ARIA charts. A national tour followed including shows at The Sydney Opera House.

“I’m probably one of the biggest John Denver fans in the entire country, and have been ever since I was a boy,” says Jason. “The very first song I ever performed on a national stage was the Denver classic ‘Annie’s Song’ when I was first on the X Factor back in 2012. ‘Back Home Again’ is one of my all-time favourites and is something I have always related to, given my country upbringing in Albert, NSW. To duet with Tania on it was just incredible as she’s truly one of Australian country music’s all-time greats.”

In between putting the finishing touches to the album in 2020, Jason used the downtime to make enormous inroads with his charity Doin It For Rural Aussie Kids which supports regional and isolated kids across the country. For his efforts, the 27-year-old recently won two awards in the prestigious 7News Young Achiever NSW/ACT Awards picking up the Freemasons Of NSW/ACT Community Service Award as well the popular vote for the People’s Choice Award.

The single ‘Back Home Again’ will be on all digital/streaming platforms from May 14 AND physical copies of “Jason Owen Sings John Denver: The Acoustic Sessions” is available for pre-order now from Sanity & JB Hi-Fi

Sally-Anne Whitten

Sally-Anne Whitten 'Not Afraid Of The Dark'

For her first release in two years, Tamworth songbird Sally-Anne Whitten has drawn inspiration from the lighthouse people in her life. Following a dark year where the artist dealt with her mum’s illness, not being able to visit her due to Covid restrictions, loss of all live performances and personal contact with family and friends; 2020 then took her precious mum too.

Despite all the heartbreak, Sally-Anne insists, “I was adamant this had to be a bright, light song. A tribute to all those warrior friends who just keep on keeping on. Legends. I had this idea running around for ages about a song with respect to these people in my life. Those who were unfailingly always there for me when I needed them. And those people are friends and family who had already been or were going through the most incredible hardships in their own lives, but bravely kept their heads up and charged on. They’re so inspiring, they’re not afraid of the dark but also not afraid to help others through the dark.”

Like most, Sally-Anne could at least connect online with not only family and family but also fellow local musician James Craswell (Jimmy Craz Band). Sally-Anne’s co-writer took her half-written song via a rough recording on a smartphone and got the vibe straight away. A gifted singer-songwriter in his own right, James also sang backing vocals on the track. To complete the song, guitarist and producer Alwyn Aurisch put away his trademark slide guitar and added some magic by channelling Mark Knopfler to keep the song on the bright side.

‘Not Afraid Of The Dark’ will be released on Friday April 30th with a launch party that evening at The Press 2340 – Tamworth

Jason Lee (with Tania Kernaghan)

Jason Lee 'Dust Beneath My Boots' Featuring Tania Kernaghan

‘Dust Beneath My Boots’, the new single from Jason Lee was co-written with Chicago-based songwriter Timothy Gleason; with more of the songwriter’s work featuring on Jason’s upcoming album. The track was recorded at Hillbilly Hut Studios with long-time producer Simon Johnson and production credits are shared by both Jason and Simon. Early into the recording process, Jason knew this song needed to be a duet and as fate would have it, Tania Kernaghan instantly agreed.

When asked about his new single, Jason reflects “When I first heard it, it reminded me of a time when I just wanted to run away from the world and feel some dirt and dust on the soles of my feet and feel at peace with no noise and fresh air. A few years ago, I suffered with my mental health and this is how I reconnected with the world. As a child I could never stay still or be in one place for too long and the city is so fast paced and when I’m out in the country or on the road I just feel at peace and relaxed. Being out in the open air and countryside is an amazing feeling of difference - emotionally, psychologically, and physically. It somehow just slows you down and allows you to breath. And that’s exactly where and what this track is about”.

The Golden Guitar nominated artist cites legends Merle Haggard, Slim Dusty and George Jones through to current country music kings Blake Shelton, Keith Urban and Jason Aldean as his musical heroes. Enjoying his own success on the live music scene, Jason has performed at the Gympie Music Muster, Tamworth Country Music Festival, Boyup Brook Country Music Festival, and opening shows for some of Australia’s much-loved artists including The McClymonts, Travis Collins and The Sunny Cowgirls.

The Academy Of Country Music graduate has been playing guitar since the age of 9, scored his first talent quest win at just 12 years old and released his self-titled debut EP in 2008. Subsequent single releases all found chart success including ‘A Memory’ remaining in the #1 spot on Hot Country Queensland for 3x weeks and Top 10 on the KIX Country Hottest 20; ‘Up A Creek’ - #1 on Hot country Queensland for 6x weeks, #6 on Country Songs Top 40 Australia Airplay Chart and Top 10 on KIX Country Hottest 20. ‘Dust Beneath My Boots’ is the 3rd single from the forthcoming album, following on from 2020 releases, ‘She’s In It’ in August and ‘Whiskey Kinda Night’ in November.

‘Dust Beneath My Boots’ will be available on all download/streaming platforms from April 9th, 2021.

Jemma Beech

Jemma Beech - 'Gravy Train'

Jemma Beech is back with a new single, ‘Gravy Train’. The follow-up to the 2018 debut album “That’s Just Me”, was inspired by the singer-songwriter’s will to be independent. The new song was written by Jemma while she was living in Western Australia’s Pilbara region and driving haul tracks in the mines; something she’d dreamt of doing for years.

The Senior and Junior Country Music Academy graduate shares, ‘Gravy Train’ signifies the breaking of the mould. Being free of the pressure, being sure of myself in what I desire in life and that every person has a story”. The single was produced by Tamworth’s Rusty Crook who also produced her debut album after the pair met on tour with The Sunny Cowgirls.

Sharing a hometown, Yanderra NSW, with one of Australia’s greatest songwriters, Joy McKean; Jemma started her country music career at Macarthur Country Music Club in New South Wales, at age 16. After being gifted an acoustic Maton guitar by her parents and attending the 2008 Tamworth Country Music Festival at 15, Jemma regards this as pivotal point in her music career.

“That’s Just Me”, debuted at No.1 on the iTunes Top Country Music Albums chart and No.19 on the ARIA Top 20 Australian Country Albums chart. Other career highlights include being the opening act for Sara Storer and The Sunny Cowgirls on their respective tours, attending the 2015 and 2016 Songwriter Retreats at the DAG Sheep Station in Nundle, NSW and recording her debut album in Nashville, Tennessee.

‘Gravy Train’ will be available on all download/streaming platforms from March 5th, 2021

Brendan Deehan

Brendan Deehan - '2 HOURS'

Brendan Deehan has worked in the Sydney pub scene for the last 15 years, playing covers as a soloist and part of the duo, Red Light Ruby. Like many artists, he has his dad’s record collection to thank for leading him to country music.

With influences including The Beatles and John Denver to discovering Keith Urban in his 20s, teenage Brendan also loved Nirvana. At a time when grunge music was king, he naturally gravitated to it and even played in a few genre-specific bands.

But the singer-songwriter kept crafting softer acoustic songs geared towards finger-picking and prettier sounds. A natural pull to country music was inevitable. However, a focus on honing his live music skills put a stop to the writing for almost a decade. Fast-forward to 2020, no live gigs and free time meant songwriting was once again the focus.

Self-penned, ‘2 Hours’ is based on the night Brendan met his partner. A discussion during Covid-lockdown about their first date and how the nervous musician took almost two hours to even look at her, lead to this debut single. Brendan and Katy recently welcomed their first child to the family, so celebrating this memory in song is certainly special. ‘2 Hours’ was mostly recorded in Brendan’s home studio with some fine-tuning and mixing by the award-winning Matt Fell.

‘2 Hours’ will be available on all download/streaming platforms from February 19th, 2021

Sky Valley Band

SKY VALLEY BAND - 'SO FINE'

‘So Fine’ the new single from Tamworth’s Sky Valley Band was written and recorded by all four members. Penned after lead vocalist Karen ‘Kaz’ Bevitt observed those around her and noticed that as is often the case, opposites do attract. The follow-up to 2020’s ‘Maybe The Moon’ shows just how different two people can be but somehow they fall in love and it just works!

The country rock band took advantage of the spare time that 2020 presented them and focused on writing and recording. This coming year will see Sky Valley Band release their lockdown best. With so much uncertainty still affecting the entertainment industry the band is focused on bringing their fans some great country music!

“But we're one of kind, you and I, you and I so fine.
Honey take my hand and we'll jump, it's alright, you and I so fine”
