NEW MUSIC: NICK PAYNE ‘OLD SYDNEY TOWN’

Old Sydney Town.ARTWORKNick Payne, singer/songwriter/ guitarist of Sydney folk/bluegrass act Dear Orphans, releases his first solo single, the self-penned ‘Old Sydney Town’.

An ode to the hardships of life in the colony of 1789 Sydney, this is an old time modal song combined with bluegrass banjo and bluesy dobro.

Co-produced with Lyn Taylor (the other half of Dear Orphans) the track was recorded in the lounge room of the band’s dobro player Jolyon Gray back in June 2014. Recorded live with only backing vocals and tambourine added later, the intention was to capture the spontaneity and energy that can only come from a live performance.

‘Old Sydney Town’ is the first single from an as-yet-untitled album currently in production and is available as a free download HERE and you can check out the video clip on YOUTUBE

The upcoming album will feature 12 songs and be divided into two ‘sides’. Side A will be songs set in the present, produced with contemporary instrumentation and Side B songs will be set in the past but produced with traditional acoustic instrumentation. Co-writes with fellow country music artists Katie Brianna and Megan Cooper are already slated as part of the track listing for an album that will include themes of hardship, revenge, death, peace, goodbyes and salvation.

Nick grew up in Sydney but has also lived in Wollongong (south of Sydney), Dalby in rural QLD, the Gold Coast and eventually made the move back home in 2005. The singer-songwriter’s first instrument of choice was the piano at aged 8, luckily at age 12 Nick was given a guitar by his mum and subsequently quit the piano! Music was a staple right through high school and in Year 11 Nick formed a Beatles cover band. In his final year of school, Nick was a member of a three-piece indie rock band called The Caveman which continued for another year or so.

With regard to the country music path, we have Ryan Adams and a borrowed copy of his “Heartbreaker” album to thank. After listening to this album, Nick dug through his music collection and realised “for a guy who doesn’t like country music I sure owned a lot of it!” Around the same time, Nick was finally able to purchase the acoustic guitar he’d always wanted – a Martin HD28V, for those wondering. And in an attempt to convince himself it was the right decision played it as much as possible and in turn the Dear Orphans was created.

GRETTA ZILLER 2015… SO FAR!

GRETTA ZILLER'S YEAR SO FAR!

GRETTA ZILLER’S YEAR SO FAR!

  • Gretta started off 2015 with a trip to Australia’s Country Music Capital where she performed multiple shows, participated in the Country Music Cavalcade for the first time & was a Grand Finalist in the Toyota Star Maker competition.
  • February saw Gretta perform at the Whittlesea Country Music Festival for the first time and the following month headed to the Yackandandah Folk Festival.
  • In March, new single, ‘Some Kind Of Habit’ was released – the track was co-written with Jasper Hollis and is a tongue in cheek ‘woe is me’ breakup tale. This is the 3rd single from Gretta’s debut EP “Hell’s Half Acre”. Check out the clip here: http://bit.ly/1x79NYX
  • That same month another track from the EP, ‘Rust And Bones’ was named as a finalist in the International Songwriting Competition – the only track from Australia in the Americana category. This track has also been a finalist in the Tamworth Songwriters’ Association – 2014 Songwriter’s Salute Awards in the Alternative/Blues/Bluegrass category. Gretta was a finalist in three categories at these awards.
  • Gretta also toured with fellow Alt-Country artists Matt Henry, Fanny Lumsden, Jen Mize, Not Good With Horses & Larissa Tandy in both Victoria and NSW. QLD tour dates are being finalised for later in the year.

NEW SINGLE, ‘INTO THE LIGHT’ FROM INNOCENT EVE

‘Into The Light’ new single from Innocent Eve at radio now.

‘Into The Light’ the latest single from Rockhampton sister-duo Innocent Eve comes from the collective sibling pen. It was the first complete song they wrote together and while the central message is about the sisters turning to each other, the message can transcend to most situations. While the sisters, Rachel & Rebecca, turn to each other, others may turn to their lover, their brother, their friend, to God, to any number of things – to come back into the light.

This is the second single to be lifted from their upcoming debut album “Temporary Balms” to be released on Friday April 3rd. The new CD was recorded last year at tommirock Studios in Newcastle, NSW, by the ARIA-charting producer Joel Black. The album’s title track is about the vices or ‘temporary’ fixes we apply to certain situations even though we know they’re not best for us nor permanent solutions, like drinking away the pain.

The singer-songwriter sisters, hail from a cattle property near Wowan, a small rural township in Central Queensland. Reminiscent of legendary sister-acts The Dixie Chicks and Wilson Phillips, Innocent Eve perform perfect harmonies. Singing together for as long as they can remember, the girls have performed together in a number of bands for the past 10 years.

This sister act has performed at some of the country’s most iconic music festivals and events including ‘Urban Country’, ‘Airlie Beach Music Festival’, ‘Boyne Valley Country Music Campout’ and ‘Cruisin’ Country’ 2, 3 and 4. First stop for Innocent Eve in 2015 was The Tamworth Country Music Festival before their regional tour of NSW.

Last Friday February 27th, Rachel & Rebecca welcomed over 150 people into The Glenmore Homestead, the intimate historic venue located on the banks of the Fitzroy River just north of Rockhampton, Queensland. This event was to launch their debut album, “Temporary Balms”, in their home-town. The property had a very earthy, vintage feel, timber and old buildings – decorated with lace, hessian and white table cloths. “The evening was just perfect, exactly what we’d hoped and planned for. We got some great feedback and now need to do some serious merchandise re-stocking!” the girls said of their home-town launch.

‘Into The Light’ was serviced to radio via WJO & Play MPE on Monday March 2nd, 2015
